We pay for everything
Every review starts with a subscription we bought ourselves, usually the mid-tier plan most readers would realistically choose. We don’t accept free accounts, press access, or comped upgrades, because a reviewer on a comped plan never hits the credit ceiling that defines the experience for everyone else.
That means the limits we describe are the limits you’ll hit, and the moment the allowance runs dry is the moment it runs dry for you.
We use it daily for weeks
A twenty-minute session tells you almost nothing about a companion platform. The first conversation is always the worst one — the memory is empty, the model knows nothing about you, and you haven’t found the register that works.
So we run each platform daily for several weeks minimum, across casual chat, long-form roleplay, character building, image and video generation, and voice calls where they exist. Verdicts written before week two would be different verdicts.
We stress-test the memory
This is the feature that decides whether a platform is worth paying for, and it’s the one most reviews skip entirely because testing it takes time.
We reference details from earlier sessions without prompting and see what comes back. We check whether personality holds across long threads or quietly drifts. We build characters, leave them a week, and return to see what survived. Where a platform sells memory as a tier upgrade, we test both levels rather than taking the marketing at its word.
We track what it actually costs
Headline prices in this category are close to meaningless. Nearly every platform bundles a credit allowance and then charges against it for images, video, and voice — so two people paying the same subscription can face very different real costs.
We log how fast allowances empty under realistic use and report what the money actually buys: how many images, how many videos, how many minutes of calling. Every price we publish is dated, because a figure without a date is probably from two years ago.
We check the boring things
Billing descriptors, cancellation flow, refund terms, who operates the company and where. We read the terms and the privacy policy rather than repeating what the homepage claims.
Then we cancel everything and measure how hard each site makes it.
We say no sometimes
Not every platform gets reviewed. We’ve declined to cover sites whose content we weren’t willing to send readers toward, and we’ve rewritten sections rather than repeat claims we couldn’t verify — anonymous payments, audited encryption, features that exist only in marketing copy.
